Farm Days
We are surrounded by orchards, ranches, and farms in our community, and we are lucky to experience them first hand and teach the kids about growing and raising your own food. There is an abundance around us that is organic, fresh, and local. We were lucky to have a visit at our friends ranch, Elder Flat, to show the kiddos what a small family run farm and ranch looks like.
It is wonderful to see them learn to hold the chicken and feed the sheep, horses, and donkey their dinner. While not everyone has an opportunity to visit a family farm, but there are a lot of places that offer kids an opportunity to feed some farm animals. We happen to get weekly eggs from these chickens, and now Waylon knows where his “eggies” are coming from - aside from “they come from Cooper’s house!”
In addition, I’ll always take an opportunity to pick fresh fruits and veggies out of the trees or from the garden. We plant a garden every summer and one of the family chores is to water and pick the tomatoes or squash. It really teaches kids an appreciation for food, and shows them where it comes from. Plus, it’s so cute to see their little faces with baskets full of berries they have picked themselves.
